Mr and Mrs SaigonMonday, April 12th, 2010Our last stop in Vietnam, before flying back to Bangkok in Thailand, was Ho Chi Minh City – fomerly known as Saigon, the pre-communist era Capital of SouthVietnam and the French Colony of Indochina before that. Thailand: Vietnam: Hong Kong : I don’t like crickets (I love them).Wednesday, March 24th, 2010And so after the worst night’s sleep ever our night bus finally rolled into Nha Trang. (more…) Hue do you think you are?Wednesday, March 24th, 2010Following our time in the north of Vietnam, we were to head south, over the 17th parallel, to Hue and Hoi An – both in the former South Vietnam. As such, we were to be treated to our first site of captured American tanks and felled American helicopters. After trying to sleep for an hour, I’d been woken up for nothing. Although she may not have understood the string of expletives that sprang from my mouth as she began her retreat, she certainly understood the sentiment and subsequently rammed the trolley into my seat. We were off to Sapa. (more…) To Halong and backWednesday, February 24th, 2010Hanoi is the gateway to the North of Vietnam, and so we soon found ourselves booking onto tours up to the mysterious Halong Bay and to the mountain town of Sapa. It was supposed to be 2 Celsius in Sapa, so we decided to do Halong first – hoping for a clear day and some warmth… (more…) Pho and HoWednesday, February 24th, 2010I was delighted to land in Hanoi for 3 reasons. Firstly, to my surprise and delight my eardrums had not burst as our flight descended into the Vietnamese capital (due to a combination of chewing gum , sucking sweets, and sniffing menthol. I did get a few ‘looks’), secondly it was freezing cold, and thirdly this was the country I’d been looking forward to the most. (more…) |
